We’ve arrived at La Baie, Quebec – one of the three boroughs in the city of Saguenay, located on Ha! Ha! Bay. We’ve cruised about 80 miles up the Saguenay River from the St Lawrence and are docked at perhaps the friendliest port we’ve ever visited. It seems that all of the towns people have arrived for a carnival right on the pier. There are pictures being snapped with folks dressed in original settler costumes and free samples of wonderful chocolate covered blueberries. There’s also a festive “sugar shack” giving out samples of warm, gooey maple syrup drizzled over shaved ice forming wonderfully sweet maple-pops. As we’re waiting for final docking procedures, there are several helicopters and seaplanes that arrive to provide the ultimate sightseeing tours of this beautiful area.
We’re booked on a ships excursion to tour the Fiords of the Saguenay River. Our tour starts with a coach ride down-river ending at the small seaside town of St. Jean. Here we embark a boat that will take us back up the river with highlights along the way including the famous statue of Our Lady of the Saguenay. After joining the coach around noon today, we’re one of the last excursions back to the ship for the 7pm departure. Tomorrow we’re in Quebec City and the end of our New England/Canada cruise. More from there…
